Final Project: ‘Blossom’

Perfume photo

My first image serves as a introductory image for my final project ‘Blossom’. These collection of photographs are entitled ‘Blossom’ in tribute to recent passing of my mother April Rose Archer. The word blossom refers to her middle name Rose and how since her passing there has been a blossoming of love and togetherness within our family. Furthermore as I ask my family members to think about what family means to them, their thoughts blossom with memories. And just as their thoughts blossom so do mine, with focal point of my thoughts represented in the above image of my mother. She will always be on my mind with fond memories of her hugs whilst smelling her perfume as she squeezed me tightly.

Grandad

The second image is that of my grandfather John William Archer. At 89 years of age and having served in World War II he has become a very wise old man. Out of all of the subjects he has the most memories to reflect on of family. Because of which out of all of the images he is positioned furthest to the left of the frame, allowing the remainder of the frame to be filled by his thoughts; an effect I have discussed in my supporting material. Furthermore all images have a vignette present to reinforce the nostalgia taking place, John in particular has the largest vignette as he is eldest and thus has greater nostalgia to reflect on.

Dad

The third image is that of my father Lee Alan Archer. At the age of 56 and grieving from the loss of his wife he has no doubt been undertaking a rollercoaster of emotions. At the point of taking this photograph and having been asked to think about what family means to him, he looked over at my brothers seated on the sofa adjacent to him and a smile soon appeared. I can’t help but smile when I look at this photograph as seeing my father smile is not something I have seen in a long time. Due to his focus upon my brothers I chose to position him in the centre of the frame due to less wondering thoughts taking place. Furthermore the vignette in this photograph is weaker as there is less nostalgia occurring.

Dan

The fourth image is that of my eldest brother Daniel Jon Archer. At the age of 26 and a father of one, soon to be two, the expression he displays evokes much about himself. We have had long and deep conversations since the passing of our mother and he has informed me how he now feels he has a greater responsibility as a father. Having lost a parent he is now aware of the devastation it can have on a family and believe you can see the multitude of his thoughts in this image. Because of which he is positioned to enable the viewer to see more of the frame, reinforcing the remainder of the frame being filled by his thought. Furthermore again the vignette in this photograph is weaker as there is less nostalgia occurring.

Charlie

The fifth and final image is that of my nephew Charlie Victor Archer. At the age of 2, he is yet to experience the big wide world and fortunately will unlikely have any memory of his Grandma’s passing. Nevertheless his is an intelligent young chap and as I mentioned the word family to him he immediately looked over to his mum and dad whom are seated behind the camera. In terms of positioning his photograph is the furthest close up due to his young years he having very little reflect on, therefore the frame is not filled by his thoughts. Furthermore again the vignette in this photograph is the weakest of them all as there is next to no nostalgia occurring.
