FLOWERS IN BLOOM

Still Life Photography

The Found Object brief tasked us to use either found or borrowed objects to construct an intriguing art piece for the photographic frame. During the workshop of week 5 I was able to experiment with such props provided/borrowed. I find narrative an integral part to any piece of my work, as the saying goes a photograph can paint a thousand words. I chose the borrowed objects below to create a grey scale tone to the first image, however emerging from this dullness is a delicate purple flower. The flower is protruding colour out of the frame and is attempting to give life to the rest of the composition.

For the second photograph I used a small portable disco light; I covered this in black wrap to reduce the light given and enable a focus upon the flower. This effect seamlessly reinforces the life and colourfulness of the flower that is now breaking free and exploding across the canvas. In the final image I unveiled the black wrap to allow the light to escape across the entire composition, thus expanding the flower light narrative.

I felt it was important to display this piece as a collective of three images rather than the solely the final image. Put simply, if the final image in the selection was to be the only one seen the narrative of life and colour escaping the flower would be unclear and more difficult to convey. By displaying the chronological images, the viewer is able to denote the flower’s journey and interpret the spread of colour.
